A new revolution in digital imaging with modular platform

Digital cinema camera maker RED has announced a completely revamped, and completely modular, digital image capture system.

The DSMC system, which can be used for still or motion capture, has the potential to completely transform the photo, video, and film industries.

RED set out to revolutionize the way films were made, bringing a film-like quality to high-definition, digitally captured video at a reasonably affordable price with its RED One camera. The company then promised to release an even better camera called Scarlet and an incredibly high resolution camera called EPIC. Founder Jim Jannard started discussing ideas to blow away the DSLR market with a digital still camera based on the sensor technology developed for the company's video cameras.

Eventually, Jannard announced that the original plans for Scarlet and EPIC had been scrapped and that a new system was coming. That system was announced today on the company's discussion forums in series of posts of product shots and a rather unusual press release.

The Scarlet and EPIC sensors are available in various formats, including 2/3", APS-C, 35mm, 645, and 6x17.
