Computer crime experts warn of Internet worm
Computer experts say the person, or group, controlling a new Internet worm could commit crimes on an unprecedented scale.
Computers infected with the virus, known as "downadup" and "conficker," could be directed to steal banking data and Social Security and credit card information.
In the last three weeks, the worm reportedly has infected millions of computers around the world.
The worm invades through a security hole that exists on hundreds of millions of Windows PCs. Microsoft issued a patch for the hole in October but many computers remain vulnerable,
The worm can transfer itself to any portable device plugged into a computer's USB input, such an iPod, digital camera or thumb storage drive, which, in turn, can infect other devices.
To protect themselves, users should download Microsoft patch MS08-067 and update antivirus software.
