Sheffield NHS develops innovative nuclear imaging technology

A groundbreaking technology developed at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (STH) will allow clinicians to manipulate and view nuclear medicine images on computers around the world.

JVIEW was originally developed by Dr Peter Metherall and the STH medical physics team in response identified by clinicians.

“Historically clinicians could only access nuclear medicine images and reports at specific points within the trust and so they saw a real opportunity to improve patient care by creating a system like JVIEW,” Metherall said.

“Now they can access images and reports at any PC terminal across the trust and securely outside of the trust. The software allows different types of information, images and reports to be reviewed remotely which isn’t possible with other imaging software.”

Link Medical, a supplier of image processing software for nuclear medicine, has taken a licence to sell and further develop the system.

The company’s technical director, Dr Matthew Westmore, said, because nuclear medicine falls outside the PACS programme, the system will solve many problems that are currently not being addressed by the National Programme for IT.

“This is a great opportunity for the NHS to benefit widely from the hard work and expertise of its dedicated and world-leading scientists,” he said.

The system will be officially launched at the British Nuclear Medicine Society spring meeting which begins on 12 May.

The deal was brokered by Medipex, the NHS innovation hub for the Yorkshire and Humber region.
